3rd April - The last 2 days have seen me closer to home at Elstree Studios, this time the show being a Who Wants to be a Millionaire Mother's Day Special. This was a good learning experience about how in-the-round television shows are filmed and lit. It was also comforting to learn how strict these gameshows are about preventing cheating - with many measures in place.
31st March - Yesterday I was back at the Royal Albert Hall, this time with Al Gurdon, for President Gorbachev's 80th Birthday celebrations. The whole show was rigged, and performed in just one day. Naturally Al was extremely busy so I just got on with any jobs I could help with. I took light and colour reading for the follow spots and colour-corrected them on instruction from Al. I helped the team from PRG rig some LED fixtures on stage and then just chipped in wherever possible.
13th March - These last few weeks I have been working on creating the 3D WYSIWYG set model for ITV's Duran Duran - One Night Only. Al Gurdon was the lighting designer and wanted to see how up to the task I am of taking 2D Autocad drawings and turning them into photorealistic models for use during the pre-programming sessions. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the London Studios and saw that my 3D model looked pretty accurate to the real thing. The show was a big success and Al's lighting design did it's job very well - having now looked at the results on the TV. Ross Williams was the programmer and was happy to share his knowledge with me. I also met gaffer Richard Gorrod who was exremely helpful and friendly and showed me the various areas common to a TV studio - I ended up helping Rich and his team rig some gear which introduced my to more new people and equipment. Overall a great few weeks!
